5 Year Guarantee

Congratulations on your purchase of awnings made from Defab's Somerton® Range of canvas fabrics.

Defab guarantees the superior quality of Somerton® canvas fabrics. Furthermore Defab will arrange for the free replacement of your Somerton® awning fabric if it fails due to faults in manufacturing or coating for an extended period of 5 years. This guarantee is only valid if the attached care instructions are followed.

This guarantee, which is offered in addition to any warranty required by law, is offered subject only to the following:

• The attached Guarantee Registration Certificate is to be correctly completed and returned to Defab within 60 days of installation of the awnings containing Defab Somerton® canvas fabrics.
• The Somerton® awning fabric is not subjected to unreasonable treatment or conditions and is maintained in accordance with the notes on 'Care of Defab Canvas Fabrics' and 'Care Instructions'.

Claims against this guarantee are to be made through the supplier or fabricator of the awning.

This guarantee relates to Defab Somerton® canvas fabrics only. In particular, it excludes the manufacture and installation of the awning and other devices.

Care Instructions

• Store, pack or roll up only when clean and dry.
• To remove dirt, brush dry fabric with a soft brush (occasional hosing may remove dust and some ingrained dirt.)
• Never scrub the fabric.
• Immediately remove deposits of organic matter (such as soil, grass cuttings, leaf litter, bird droppings, vehicle exhaust, pollutants etc)
• Remove any mildew, as it appears on the fabric, first by brushing then by treating with diluted chlorine bleach (typically 1 part White King to 4 parts of water to achieve 1% available chlorine.) Allow to dry in full sun then hose well to remove residue.
• Do not use strong bleaches such as "Pool Chlorine".
• Do not use soaps, detergents, solvents or other liquid cleansers.
• Use only Defab approved proofing agents.

The Somerton Range

Defab canvas fabrics are designed and manufactured to resist the effects of Australia’s ever-changing weather conditions. International standards and procedures are in place to avoid quality flaws reaching the end-user, however, the occasional occurrence of yarn slubs and knots are characteristics of canvas fabrics and are more evident in light colors and translucent products. The fabricator should carefully assess the suitability of the fabric for the particular application and the customer should apply through care and maintenance to their awning and other fabrications using Defab Somerton awning fabrics to ensure satisfactory performance and longevity.

When You Receive Your Awnings

Extend the awning fully and thoroughly. Inspect the awning with the installer. Confirm your choice of design and check that the guarantee has been signed by the fabricator so you can register for the Defab extended 5 year guarantee.

To Get The Best From Your New Awnings

Handling during fabrication and transportation may have left some minor wrinkles in the awning fabric. Avoid rolling the awning up with these wrinkles still in the fabric.

• Wet the fabric while the awning is fully extended using a domestic hose at a moderately high pressure for several minutes until the fabric is uniformly wet
• Allow the fabric to dry completely in full sun.

Also, follow this procedure if the awning has been rolled up for a long period of time.

Tips For Longer Life of Somerton Canvas®

• Awnings should be used fully extended. Periodically adjust awnings to their fullest extension if they have been used partly retracted for any length of time.
• Only roll up your awnings when clean and dry.
• Always roll up your awnings in high winds and storms - the leverage exerted can strain fittings and mountings.
• Keep your awnings clean! Do not mow lawns or clean gutters etc near awnings when they are extended.
• Occasionally rejuvenate your awnings! Exposure to the elements and excessive cleaning may affect water proofness and appearance of Defab Somerton awning fabrics. Additional proofing finishes may help maintain the look. Only ever use one type of proofing agent on an awning. Fluoro-chemicals like Scotch-Guard fabric protector may be used on all fabrics.
• Only Defab approved canvas treatments containing mildew inhibitors may be used on Defab Somerton awning fabrics.
